“I think the most important architecture is that for humans, in other words, houses”

Wayne Gillespie

Wayne Gillespie is part of a Melbourne architectural tradition. He achieved a personal style that is instantly recognisable to both the professional and the lay passerby.

Our client purchased this property with the knowledge of the original author however recognised over time through previous owners it had been manipulated to lose the essense of its origins. We re-instated the house to its intended state adding a new sympathetic proposition for the interior spaces.

In an alignment with our practice’s thinking Gillespie once said, “A building should be designed in an honest way without resorting to featurism. It should be restrained and should not compete with the surrounding buildings in an egotistical or vulgar manner”

We believe in classical architectural principals. Symmetry, order and proportion.

Proportion is the meaning of volumetric order, a house functions because of the order of program where each room is experienced through the proportion of space. In this case we have utilised the dominance of proportion in plan where the romantic detailing of our interior interventions within the house becomes a new overlay of our client’s character.

The double height entry lobby is celebrated through stone flooring, this is the centrepoint of the house, the connector to each space.

With a softened and textured wall treatent the vibrant flooring and bold Dale Frank artworks do not overwhelm ths space as the architecture withholds their presence within a greater proportion of volume.

Clasisical principals are carried further into influencing the interior where the detailing draws from artist Donald Judd, also a master of proportion.

The kitchen island and stone detailing through-out continue the repitious nature of the existing architectural language.

Like Judd, merging contemporary material applications, the interiors transition the existing house into a modern arena.

The private residence is completed with our of selection of curated Australian artworks and an ecclectic mix of furniture styles.
