Wategos Residence

2025
Wategos, Byron Bay NSW Australia

The first time you find yourself at Wategos Beach you notice that something feels different.

One can feel the 20,000 year-old tales of a sacred land of healing, or the geophysical lines of obsidian crystal veins. Wategos is a special place where an enlightened meaning is found.

Here we have designed a private residence for a modern family for their connection to place and their connection to each other.

With our commitment to place and respect for country, we acknowledge the Arakwal Bumberlin people of the Bundjalung Nation.

We consulted with the Arakwal People for over 18 months during our design process who have provided their support for the placement and design of this new home on the land.

The site, which was farmed as a banana plantation during the early settlement of Wategos, is the place for a home for a local Byron Bay family.

Together with ecological specialists we have designed the largest private re-vegetation of native species ever in Wategos with over 9,900 new native trees and plants that create two new littoral rainforest re-habilitation zones.

Whilst there is no information of this land ever being a dense forest, the forestation planting initiative adapts farmed land into a dense rainforest, substantially improving the biodiversity for the region.

The architecture and landscape are designed together as one for the benefit of the site and the community.
